A reader that likes reading about someone’s experience during one of the worst times would enjoy this. There’s many readers who enjoy reading about people’s experience because it’s interesting to know about how others feel when going or doing something you can’t do or experience yourself. Readers that enjoy historical books would like this because the Holocaust was a huge event that brings many questions and reading a survivors story could bring some answers. Prompt #54

Pages 152-165

The most important sentence in The Boy On The Wooden Box is a sentence where Leon says something powerful, “One day I might feel safe again.” I think this is the most important sentence because it tells how rough the situation is and how the Holocaust changed many lives. This sentence is powerful because many of us today have at least a place where we call “our safe spot” but people in this situation didn’t have a place. And Leon saying that one day he might feel safe again is so right because being in this situation is the worst nightmare one can ever have.

Prompt #78

Pages 133-151

If I could be related to my favorite character in the book it would be Leon Leyson. I would like to be related to Leon because he is so adventurous which means he likes to discover things and it would be a pleasure to discover new things during this time period with Leon. Leon is also very hard working and that gets me interested in Leon because he is the youngest but he already wants to do what’s possible  to help his family out. Also, being related to Leon would be interesting because I know his personality by reading the book but it would be more interesting living with him and knowing him in person because as I learn about Leon I still question myself about him, like is he different in person? Does he fight and argue with his siblings especially during this time? I would also like to be related to Leon because of his personality and his acts of kindness.

Prompt #69

Pages 113-132

The character I would like to be in this book is Leon Leyson. I would like to be in Leon Leyson shoes because I love the type of character that he is adventurous, positive, and determined. I would like to be as positive as Leon because even though he is in a rough situation that doesn’t stop him so he finds a way to make it seem good. Leon is very determined which is something I wish I had more of because Leon doesn’t let anything stop him and is strong. I would also like to be in Leons shoes because he is the youngest of all his siblings and he is trying to figure out ways to help out his family which is risky. This makes me want to be in his shoes because in my life the best thing I can do to help my family out is to go to school but in Leon’s life it is very different and risky. His life is different because he is going through the Holocaust where there’s killings going on, families getting separated, and there’s not much freedom.

Prompt #19, 21

Pages 98-112

My opinion of Leon Leyson is that he is a very strong and determine young man. Leon is strong because he almost risked his own life to save an elderly woman’s life. Leon is also determine because he has a sweet heart that doesn’t stop him from being a generous and helpful young boy. As I read, I felt touched by Leon’s act of kindness because there’s not many young boys who would risk their own life’s to save another. I also felt touched by Leon’s act of kindness because being in a situation where you know there’s shootings and hatred going on that didn’t stop him from going out to save a strangers life. That is really brave of him because who knows what would of happened after. Also, there’s not many young boys like Leon who have a big heart and help others.

Prompt #15

Pages 80-97

The character I most admire is Leon Leyson because he is so positive and strong. I admire Leon’s positivity because when I’m in a bad situation or feeling I usually get negative and don’t think about the positive but Leon is different because he knows that he is a Jew and what is going on between the Jews getting killed or taken away and he doesn’t let that bring him down he in fact looks and finds ways to make the Nazis think differently about the Jews. I also admire Leon’s strength because nothing really makes him think or feel different for, everyone else even if he is a Jew and Nazis don’t like them as he said, “Even when I didn’t quite get the jokes, I laughed anyway because it was a way to show the Nazis they didn’t control me.”

Prompt #13

Pages 67-79

As I’m reading and learning about the heroic figure, Oskar Schindler who saved many life’s including Leon Leyson, I am starting to like this man. I like Oskar Schindler because he is so generous and loving. Oskar is a generous man because after the whole situation of Leon’s dad, Mosche, going to prison and being defeated by the Nazi, Oskar was so generous to offer Mosche a job. Mosche didn’t just get hired from the job but he was given protection because he had a Besheinigung which was a document that stated that Leon’s father was officially employed by a German company. Oskar is also loving because in the Prologue I read a part where Leon said that if it weren’t for this man he wouldn’t be alive. Leon was also going to meet him after many years. This right away caught me and made me love Oskar because he risked so much to save Leon’s and others life during a rough situation and Oskar did it by heart not because he had or was asked to.

Prompt #3

Pages 51-66

I really dislike the idea of Leon giving up just because his father was defeated by the Nazi after getting out of prison. He says, “If he couldn’t stand up to the Nazis, how could I?” I don’t like his thinking right now because Leon is such a strong and determined young man and he’s getting stopped by these Nazis but it shouldn’t because if he believes in himself and doesn’t give up he could win. I also dislike the idea of the Nazis changing and hurting the Jews. I don’t like the fact that the Nazis are changing the Jews in becoming fearful and not being who they used to be. For example, Leon’s dad was a strong man but after getting caught by the Nazis and loosing his job changed everything in him and became a weak man.

Prompt #26

Pages 30-47

I love the way Leon Leyson is a strong, determine and adventurous young man. As I’m reading this book, Leon has described himself as a strong and determined young man because he’s going through this rough situation, the Holocaust, and he isn’t like I would act if I were in his shoes where I would just panic, cry and sadly probably wouldn’t make it out alive. Leon is the opposite of me he is strong and determined he solves his owns problems and he cares for his family. Leon is also very adventurous and that’s what I love about him. He says that everyday is a new adventure and that he can’t wait to discover new things and that’s what makes him very lovable, his personality is very positive.
